Transcribe Interview: (Part one)

Interviewer: What is your name?

Vanessa: Vanessa

I: Alright Vanessa, so you’re in Kindergarten? Do you like it?

V:

I: Do you like it a lot?

V:

I: What is your teacher’s name?

V: Miss Romero

I: Miss Romero, What do you like about it?

V: We have three rows of hip-hip-hurray days!

I: Three rows of hip-hip-hurray days? What are hip-hip-hurray days?

V: It’s when everybody is on time and...

I: Everybody got to school on time?

V:

I: Oh! So what do you get to do on a hip-hip-hurray day?

V: You do like this… Hip-Hip Hurray Day!!I: The whole class does it?V: I: Oh wow! Do you have lots of friends in kindergarten?

V:

I: What do you all do?

V: We play together

I: You play together on the playground?

V:

I: Oh, well do you like school?

V:

I: You do! What kinds of things have you learned this year? Do you remember?

V: Yeah, no, not so much

I: Not so much? Have you learned how to read?

V:

I: Do you like reading?

V:

I: What were those books you got today?

V: Umm… they were fun to read

I: They were fun to read? Are you good at reading?

V:

I: Oh that’s good. Ok let’s see, now you know Spanish too don’t you!

V:

I: Do you know how to read in Spanish too?

V:

I: No, you only know how to read in English? Ok. And you speak Spanish at home right? Your mommy speaks Spanish, and your grandmother?

V: My whole family

I: Your whole family speaks Spanish. Wow! So when you came to Kindergarten did you know English?

V:

I: A little bit. What did you know when you came to Kindergarten?

V: I know how to do Hello, Hi, and that’s it I think

I: That’s it you think? Oh wow so you didn’t know very good English when you started Kindergarten then did you? But now you know a lot! Because you are sitting here talking to me and you understand everything I say!

V:

I: Wow! It’s almost into February and school started in August

V: We had two birthdays today!I: You had two birthdays today? Who had a birthday?V: Umm… two boys, one who umm whose his umm he’s going to be four and one is going to be two

I: Two? There is a two year old in kindergarten?V: No! In the birthday we are doing he is going to be his birthday today and we are going to his birthday now when we gettin’ homeI: Oh! You are going to a birthday party
